French Village
French Village at Sun World Ba Na Hills represents a classic and romantic France with a combination of unique buildings: squares, churches, towns, villages, and hotels. Coming to the French Village, tourists can feel like they are traveling back in time, experiencing the delicate and poetic living space of one of the oldest countries in the world.
The story of Ba Na Mountain
In 1901, when Vietnam was still a French colony, after finding and building a resort in Da Lat, Governor-General of Indochina Paul Doumer entrusted Captain Victor Adrien Debay with the task of finding a cool climate to build resorts and treat diseases in Da Nang and Hue.
After a period of searching, Debay found a mountain of more than 1400m high attitude, about 30km west of Da Nang. But it was not until 1919 that the first hotel was built in Ba Na.
Those day only French officers and Vietnamese high officers came here to rest. Nowsaday everyone can come here easily because the road is convenient and the cable car system shortens time a lot.
After the French withdrew from Vietnam, Ba Na Hills tourist area was destroyed. It was not until 1999 that the Da Nang government had a plan to restore the resort. And as a result, today Sungroup has built a new international resort area in Ba Na – Nui Chua Mountain.
Why is it called: Ba Na Hills?
There are currently three main explanations of the origin of the name of Bà Nà Hills:
- They think there were many bananas in the Nui Chua mountain very long time ago, so the French people called Banane montagne, but the Vietnamese people read it as Ba Na. It sounds reasonable!
- The second theory, according to writer Nguyen Ngoc, the word “Ba Na” in the Katu language means “my house”. *Katu is one of minority ethnic group of Vietnam.
- The third explanation: in the past, this land belonged to the Kingdom of Champa (before Huyen Tran Princess married King Che Man, he offered to give land to Tran Dynasty), the Champa people worshiped Ponagar godess, or also known as Thien Ya Na, so called Ba Na mountain for short.
